Analysis of Baseball Trajectories
نویسنده
چکیده
Fly ball trajectories games played during the 2015-2017 seasons at Tropicana Field are investigated. A randomly selected half of the 2016 data are used to establish a model for the drag and lift coefficients. That model is then used to calculate the trajectories for the remaining data, with fixed initial conditions determined by Statcast. The calculated distances are then compared to the actual distances.

Analysis of PITCHf/x Pitched Baseball Trajectories
Abstract An analysis is presented of 99 baseball trajectories measured by the PITCHf/x tracking system pitched by Boston Red Sox lefthander Jon Lester in the August 3, 2007, game against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. The analysis technique is described in detail. The drag and lift coefficients and the magnitude and direction of the spin vector are extracted and discussed. A pitch classi...
متن کاملAnticipation in Baseball: Differences in Using Spatial Cues between Skilled and Novice Players
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the differences between novice and skilled baseball players to anticipate the type of ball being pitched and to specify the players’ dependence on distributed or local kinematic spatial cues. Male baseball players (N= 15; Mage: 27.73 ± 6.28 years; baseball experience: 7.90 ± 5.69 years) and novices (N= 15; Mage: 23.10 ± 5.68 years; no playing exp...
متن کاملWhat New Technologies Are Teaching Us About the Game of Baseball
The trajectory of a baseball moving through the air is very different from the one we teach in our introductory classes, in which the only force is that due to gravity. In reality, the aerodynamic drag force (which retards the motion) and the Magnus force on a spinning baseball (which causes the ball to curve) play very important roles that are crucial to many of the subtleties of the game. Des...
متن کاملConvergence of trajectories in infinite horizon optimization
In this paper, we investigate the convergence of a sequence of minimizing trajectories in infinite horizon optimization problems. The convergence is considered in the sense of ideals and their particular case called the statistical convergence. The optimality is defined as a total cost over the infinite horizon.
متن کاملUncovering the Mysteries of the Knuckleball by
T he knuckleball is perhaps the most mysterious of baseball pitches. It is thrown slower than normal pitches, it is barely spinning, and it appears to float to home plate. Its motion seems to be very unpredictable by anyone: the batter, the catcher, and even the pitcher himself. Moreover, there is a common perception that a knuck-leball does not follow a smooth path to home plate, but instead "...
